If a Dry Garment Touches a Pig, It Does Not Become Impure
Question
If a pig touches the body, will one only have to wash the clothing, or [perform] ghusl? Or is there some distinction between a dry and a wet pig? Since the dog, according to the Hanafis, is not impure in its essence (najis al-‘ayn), and moreover the saliva of a dog, if it bites while angry, is not impure: [ar]ولو عضّ كلبٌ عضوَ شخصٍ ملاعبًا تنجّس، والغضبانُ ليس يؤثّر[/ar] “If a dog bites a person’s limb playfully, [the limb] becomes impure, while [the bite of] an angry one has no effect” (preface to Nur al-Idah, p.
Answer
If a dry pig touches clothing or the body and no trace of it is left, the clothing or body does not become impure thereby, as is the ruling on a dry najis al-‘ayn. However, if [the pig] is wet, then washing the place that the moisture touched is necessary. There is no reason for ghusl to become obligatory.
