The Method of Purifying Impure Ghee
Question
If a mouse falls into an earthenware vessel of ghee or milk and dies, is it permissible to use that milk or ghee or not? If it is not permissible, is it permissible to use the vessel after washing it or not? For it is widespread among the common people that if a mouse dies in an earthenware vessel, or a dog puts its mouth into an earthenware vessel, that earthenware vessel does not become pure even by washing. Is there any basis for this or not?
Answer
If the ghee is solidified, one should take out the mouse, remove a little from around it and throw it away; the rest is pure. If the ghee is thin and flowing, then all of it has become impure. The way to purify it is to add water equal to it in quantity and cook it on the fire so that the water there burns off; then pour in the same amount of water again and cook it.
