Is an Animal Slaughtered by One Who Does Not Fast Unlawful?
Question
It is commonly held among us that if a person who does not keep the fasts of blessed Ramadan slaughters any animal, the animal he slaughters will be unlawful (haram). I have not seen this ruling in any book. I asked some scholars, and they said that by not fasting a person becomes a fasiq (open sinner), and an animal slaughtered by a fasiq is unlawful.
Answer
The fast of Ramadan is a categorical fard (fard qat‘i). Abandoning it without a valid Shari‘a excuse is haram and a major sin. Despite this, the animal he slaughters is not unlawful.
