The Manner of Paying Fidya and Its Recipients

Question

If fidya is permitted, is it necessary to pay the fidya for each fast daily, or can the fidya for the fasts of the whole month be paid in one lump sum at the end of Ramadan, or even in advance? And if that is possible, how much grain must be given at the end of Ramadan as the fidya for the whole month? Can its value be paid according to the market rate or not?

Answer

In a case where fidya is prescribed, it can be paid in one lump sum before Ramadan or after Ramadan, or daily — however one wishes; there is no particular restriction. The fidya for one fast is grain equal to one sadaqat al-fitr, or its value; the value should be reckoned at the ordinary market rate.
