Paying the Fidya for Prayer and Fasting
Question
Hinda, in old-age frailty, was ill with paralysis and fever for five months — from Jumada al-Akhira to the middle of Shawwal — and died. During this period there was no relief at any time. The prayers of those days were missed by her, and she could not keep the fasts either. However, during the first two months mentioned she remained fully conscious, while in the remaining period her state of consciousness was such that she recognised those who came to visit her and asked for food and water, but was not at all…
Answer
In the case described, making up the fasts was not wajib upon her, and therefore the fidya did not become wajib either. As for those prayers whose time she reached while retaining her faculties to such an extent that she could pray by gestures, but then did not pray them, neither on time (ada’) nor as a make-up (qada)
