Should the Fidya for Fasts Be Paid at the Start of Ramadan or at Its End?

Question

Is it necessary to pay the fidya as soon as blessed Ramadan begins, or can it also be given after some days of Ramadan have passed, if the intention is made beforehand that I will give it? At my home both my father and my mother are extremely weak and ill; their health and strength are very little, and there is no hope of their returning.

Answer

For a very old, frail person (shaykh fani), paying the fidya is valid both at the beginning of Ramadan and at the end.
