The prayer of a resident follower behind a travelling imam

Question

(1) The imam is a traveller and the followers (muqtadis) are residents. The imam prays two rak'as and gives the salam, and the followers stand up to pray the remaining two rak'as. In these two rak'as, should the resident followers recite al-Hamd (Surah al-Fatiha), or should they remain standing for the length of al-Hamd and then perform ruku'? (2) If a resident follower joins a travelling imam in the second rak'a, how should he complete the rest of the prayer? And if he begins following the imam (iqtida')

Answer

(1) He should not recite al-Hamd; rather he should stand for the same length of time and then perform ruku'. [ar]وصح اقتداء المقيم بالمسافر في الوقت وبعده، فإذا قام المقيم إلى الإتمام لا يقرأ[/ar] “The resident's following of a traveller is valid both within the time and after it; and when the resident stands up to complete [the prayer], he does not recite” (al-Durr al-Mukhtar)
