The prayer of a latecomer (masbuq) behind a travelling imam
Question
The imam is a traveller. If some travelling follower, who knows that the imam is a traveller, [joins] during the tahiyyat, then after the imam gives the salam, will this follower pray his two rak'as “full” or “empty”? And if the follower is a resident, then after the imam's salam will he pray his first two rak'as “full” and both of the last two “empty”, or what?
Answer
“Full”, because at that point he is a masbuq, and a masbuq has the ruling of one praying individually (munfarid): [ar]إنه (أي المسبوق) منفرد فيما يقضي[/ar] “He (that is, the masbuq) is a munfarid in what he makes up” (Fatawa Alamgiri, p. 91).
