Reciting part of Surat al-Baqara in the last tarawih
Question
Nowadays in blessed Ramadan the huffaz generally complete the Qur’an as follows: they complete the Qur’an in the nineteenth rak‘a, and in the twentieth rak‘a they recite from “Alif Lam Mim” to “muflihun”. Shami too wrote that this is permissible without being makruh; the respected Mawlawi ‘Abd al-Hayy Firangi Mahali ﵀ also wrote that it is commendable (mustahsan) or mustahabb; the respected Mawlana Ahmad Rida Khan in “Bahar-e Shari‘at” (“The Spring of the Shari‘a”) also wrote that it is mustahabb.
Answer
The essential aim is to act upon the hadith “al-hal al-murtahil” (the one who alights and sets off [again]), and it is achieved in both cases. However, completing [the Qur’an] in the nineteenth [rak‘a] and beginning in the twentieth necessarily entails departing from the order, which is makruh; [but] in “Shami” this case has been excepted from being makruh. A caution (tanbih)
