Making Up the Four Sunna Rak‘as of Zuhr
Question
Before the fard of Zuhr there are four rak‘as of emphasized sunna. A person who is a muqim (resident, not a traveller) entered the mosque when the Zuhr congregation had already stood for prayer, and he joined the congregation. Should this person, after performing the fard, pray those four rak‘as of emphasized sunna or not, when time still remains? Or have they lapsed from him?
Answer
The Hanafi scholars have said, and it is their fatwa, that those four rak‘as of emphasized sunna should certainly be prayed if the time of Zuhr remains; and although these four rak‘as of emphasized sunna were delayed because of joining the congregation, they by no means lapse — performing them is necessary. The details of this are found in Sharh al-Wiqaya.
