How many rak‘as [of sunna] are there after Jumu‘a

Question

On Friday, are six rak‘as after Jumu‘a sunna, or four? Some scholars of research (muhaqqiqs) pray only four rak‘as. Please inform us of the position on which fatwa is given (mufta bihi).

Answer

Four rak‘as after Jumu‘a are established abundantly by hadiths, both verbal and practical (qawliyya and fi‘liyya). The position of the Imam A‘zam ﵀ has also been transmitted as this. However, some narrations mention two, so Imam Abu Yusuf ﵀ and some other elders hold six rak‘as, in order to act on both narrations.
