Two Nafl Rak‘as after Zuhr, Maghrib and ‘Isha’

Question

Some people pray two rak‘as of nafl after the sunna of Zuhr, two nafl after the sunna of Maghrib and two nafl after the sunna of ‘Isha’, and they reproach those who do not pray them. Those who do not pray them say that these nafl prayers have no basis in hadith or fiqh. Kindly therefore set out in writing their basis with proofs.

Answer

The nafl prayers mentioned are established by reliable books. In Maraqi al-Falah: [ar]ومنها ركعتان بعد الظهر، ويندب أن يضم إليهما ركعتين فتصير أربعاً.[/ar] “Among them are two rak‘as after Zuhr; and it is mandub to add two more rak‘as to them, so that they become four.” [ar]قال الطحطاوي: وهو مخير إن شاء جعلها بسلام واحد وإن شاء جعلها بسلامين.
