A masbuq completing his prayer by watching another masbuq
Question
Two people came together and joined the congregation, and both were masbuq. When the imam finished the prayer, both stood up to complete the part of the prayer they had missed, but one remembered how much of his prayer he had missed while the other did not. Is it permissible for the second person, who does not remember, to complete as many rak‘as as the one who remembers completes — that is, relying on his memory, to complete his own prayer by watching him? Will his prayer be valid in this way or not?
Answer
In this way his prayer will be valid, but he should not make the intention of following (iqtida’) him; rather he should simply pray as many rak‘as as the other prays (Tahtawi, p. 159).
