Definition of a Masbūq

Question

Who is called a masbūq, and what is the ruling regarding him?

Answer

A masbūq is a person who did not join the congregational prayer from the beginning and therefore missed one or more rak‘ahs. The ruling for him is that after the imam finishes the prayer, he should complete the rak‘ahs he missed. In the first and second rak‘ahs that he performs after the imam, he should recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah followed by another sūrah.
