The ruling for the masbuq: recitation in the rak‘a he makes up
Question
A congregation is under way; the imam has completed one rak‘a, and in the second rak‘a a muqtadi came and joined. Should the one rak‘a that the muqtadi has left be prayed “empty” (with al-Fatiha only) or “filled” (with an added sura)? The imam recited “Qul a‘udhu bi-rabbi l-falaq” in the first rak‘a and “Qul a‘udhu bi-rabbi n-nas” in the second — the imam has reached the end of the order of the Qur’an. What, then, should the muqtadi recite?
Answer
He should pray it “filled” and recite “Qul a‘udhu bi-rabbi l-falaq”.
