When to recite the thana’
Question
Question: Zayd stood up to lead the prayer and began the prayer (literally, “bound the niyya”) at “qad qamat al-salah”. The followers (muqtadis) and the mukabbir began the prayer immediately after the iqama was completed, but they could not recite the thana’ because the imam had [already] started Surat al-Fatiha. It is Zayd’s habit not to give time for reciting the thana’. After the prayer ‘Umar objected: “O imam Zayd, when are all of us — the followers and the mukabbir — to recite the thana’?
Answer
[ar]وشروع الإمام في الصلاة مذ قيل قد قامت الصلاة، ولو أخر حتى أتمها لا بأس به إجماعًا، وهو قول الثاني والثالث، وهو أعدل المذاهب كما في شرح المجمع لمصنفه، وفي القهستاني معزيًا للخلاصة أنه الأصح[/ar] “The imam begins the prayer from the moment ‘qad qamat al-salah’ is said; and if he delays until [the mu’adhdhin] completes it [the iqama], there is no harm in that by consensus.
