Fatha or sukun on the final kaf of the thana’
Question
Question: in the thana’ recited in prayer, at its end should one say “وَلَا إِلٰهَ غَيْرُكَ” (with a fatha), or should “غَيْرُكْ” (with a sukun) be recited? Please enlighten us in the light of the Book and the Sunna.
Answer
If the ta‘awwudh (“a‘udhu”) is to be recited after the thana’, one may also recite “غَيْرُكَ” with a fatha on the kaf; if one is to end the breath on the kaf [i.e. pause there], then make the kaf sakin (with a sukun). And if the ta‘awwudh is not to be recited after the thana’ — as is the case with the follower (muqtadi) — then make the kaf sakin.
