The status of the thana’

Question

Question: does the thana’ have one and the same status in every prayer, or does it have one status in sunna and nafl prayers and another in the fard prayer?

Answer

In every prayer — fard, sunna, witr or nafl — the thana’ is recited in the first rak‘a; its status is the same in all of them: [ar]ويستفتح كل مصل[/ar] “And every person praying opens [the prayer with the thana’]” (“Nur al-Idah”, p. 73).
