When a follower who arrives after the prayer has begun should recite the thana’

Question

Question: the imam began the recitation in a silent prayer, and after that Zayd came and joined the prayer. When should he now recite the thana’?

Answer

If [the imam] has already begun the sura, Zayd should not recite the thana’. If, however, he has begun [only] al-Fatiha, and [Zayd] is able to recite [the thana’] during the imam’s pauses and the stops at the ends of the verses, then let him recite it; otherwise let him not recite it.
