Separating and joining the phrases of the adhan (another fatwa): pauses in the takbirs and shahadas
Question
At the beginning of the adhan “Allahu akbar” is [said] four times. Should they be read twice in one call without a pause (sakta), or once in one call with a pause? And likewise the two shahadas and the rest. Please set out the whole method together with the statements of the jurists.
Answer
The words “Allahu akbar” should be read twice in one breath in such a way that the ra’ of “akbar” is sakin and [both are] read without a pause; after reading them twice, one pauses (sakta), and then in a second breath reads them twice in the same way. The kalima of the two shahadas should be read once in one breath, then a pause, and the second time in a second breath.
