Drawing out the word “Allah” in the adhan
Question
There are people who draw out the lam of the second “Allahu akbar” of the adhan, and in “al-salatu khayrun mina-l-nawm” they draw out the lam a great deal; in the adhan [the voice] is raised and lowered a great deal. Nowadays such adhans are recited in most mosques. According to the Shari‘a, how much may the lam of the words “Allahu akbar” be drawn out?
Answer
Some reciters (qurra’) have written that the prolongation of glorification on the lam of the words “Allahu akbar” is correct. Moreover, extending the voice is indeed intended in the adhan, so that the sound reaches far; the jurists, too, have explicitly mentioned lengthening the words [of the adhan].
