Marriage to a Foster Brother

Question

Zayd has two wives (Hinda and Zaynab). ‘Umar drank Hinda’s milk, and Zayd has a daughter, Khalida, who is from Zaynab’s womb. What needs to be ascertained is whether, according to the Shari‘a, fosterage (rada‘a) will be established between ‘Umar and Khalida or not. Explain and be rewarded.

Answer

In the case asked about, Hinda’s milk is from Zayd; therefore ‘Umar has become Zayd’s foster son, and Khalida is Zayd’s daughter by lineage (even though she is from Zaynab’s womb). Hence ‘Umar and Khalida are brother and sister, and nikah between them is not permissible.
