Marrying One’s Milk Niece (Sister’s Daughter)
Question
I have an acquaintance about whom I wish to learn the following. A nikah has taken place here, and after the nikah it became known that the girl, in her infancy, drank the milk of the husband’s full sister for one or two months, because after the birth the girl’s mother, being ill, could not breastfeed her, and she was given the milk of the husband’s sister. According to the Shari‘a, has this nikah taken place or not? If the nikah has not taken place, then what should be done according to the Shari‘a?
Answer
Nikah with a milk niece (sister’s daughter) is haram. If this was done by mistake, the two should be separated immediately, and the husband should say: “I have ended the marital relationship and given talaq.” After that, once the ‘idda of three menstrual periods has passed, the girl should be married elsewhere. If there has been no seclusion (khalwa)
