Two Brothers Marrying Two Sisters

Question

Zayd’s elder daughter is engaged to ‘Amr’s elder son. Relations between the two sides are, praise be to Allah, very pleasant. ‘Amr wishes that his younger son also be matched with Zayd’s younger daughter. But Zayd has an excuse: for three generations it has happened that whenever two sisters of his family were engaged into one and the same house to two full brothers, it did not turn out well, that is, one brother or one sister died. Therefore he feels unable to agree.

Answer

To imagine or to believe, on account of two sisters being married into one house to two brothers, that one sister will certainly die or one brother will die, that the household will not be able to prosper, is baseless and wrong according to the Shari‘a. It must be corrected. Death has an appointed time, whether the marriages are in one house or separately.
