A mosque’s worn-out mat in the grave
Question
Here there is a common custom that a mosque’s worn-out mat is put into the grave, and then a new mat is bought and left in its place. Is this custom permissible or not?
Answer
Spreading a mat beneath the deceased in the grave is makruh (thus in “Tahtawi”). If some person brought a mat to the mosque and spread it, and it has now worn out and is no longer fit for use in the mosque, then the original owner who spread it has the choice to do with it as he wishes. Thus in “al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya”.
