Does Hajj Lapse If One’s Wealth Is Lost?

Question

Question: Hajj had already become fard upon a person, but somehow his wealth was lost, as a result of which he lost the ability to go for Hajj. Will the Hajj now lapse from him or not?

Answer

If he had wealth sufficient for Hajj at a time when people were not setting out for Hajj, and the time of Hajj was still far off, and that wealth was lost before the time of Hajj came, then Hajj is not fard upon him. If he had the wealth in the season of Hajj and had already made the intention, but the wealth was lost without his choice, then too Hajj is not upon him.
