A method of becoming a practitioner of incantations
Question
Question: Zayd said to Bakr concerning amulets: “Teach me too how to fill in amulet squares.” Bakr said: “Learn it, but there is a condition for it. To become a practitioner of incantations, fill in one thousand amulet squares of Allah; on that same day keep a fast, knead fine white flour and wrap it around the squares. While you are filling in these squares, do not speak to anyone during that time and do not get up — only prayer is allowed.
Answer
One thing in this practice is questionable: even returning someone’s salam on the way to the river has been forbidden, whereas in the Shari‘a it is necessary, unless a person is occupied with dhikr, recitation and the like.
