Trousers and other clothing
Question
Question: Can a person who wears trousers and a shirt enter Paradise or not? Can Allah Most High be pleased with him or not? According to some people, trousers and a shirt are imitation (tashabbuh) of the English. Then is there no imitation of the Hindus in the Aligarh-cut trousers and the Bengali kurta (a long loose shirt), or the gusseted kurta, or the Lucknow kurta, which Indian people and Congress people (supporters of the Indian National Congress party) generally wear?
Answer
Wearing clothing that is the distinctive mark (shi‘ar) of the kafirs or the fasiqs is prohibited. The shirt and the Aligarh trousers are not impermissible; by wearing them and being obedient, one can become deserving of Paradise. Western trousers too are no longer the specific distinctive mark of the People of the Book.
