Wearing a shirt, trousers and a coat

Question

Question: (1) Is it permissible to wear these three things — a shirt, trousers and a coat — or not? If one prays in them, will the prayer be makruh or not? (2) Is wearing these three makruh absolutely or not? If there is dislike (karaha) in it, then of what degree? (3) What is meant by resemblance to a people? If Muslims and Hindus generally both wear the shirt, it no longer remains the distinctive mark (shi‘ar) of any people, and then no resemblance to them remains — just as the sari (an Indian women’s garment)

Answer

Wherever a garment is not the distinctive mark (shi‘ar) of the kafirs or the fasiqs, but is generally worn by everyone, the righteous and the fasiqs alike, there it will not be called prohibited. Yes, the dress in accordance with the sunna will be called better and more virtuous in comparison with it.
