How long should the kurta be
Question
Question: What kind of kurta (a long loose shirt), and of what length, is it sunna to wear? Is it established from the Prophet ﷺ that the kurta reached to mid-shin? If so, then is (a kurta) above mid-shin — whether below the knee, or above it, or to the waist — all the same in being contrary to the sunna, or not? If they are the same, then I see some people who, if someone is wearing an ‘aba (outer garment) to the waist, urge him (to wear it) to the knee.
Answer
Among the Arabs it is generally customary to wear a long kurta, reaching nearly to the ankles. The kurtas of the noble Companions ﵃ reached to mid-shin. The Prophet ﷺ also had one short kurta (qasir al-qamat), the details of which are not known; the narration of Ibn Majah is in the Book of Clothing (Kitab al-Libas).
