Will the Punishment of the Grave Befall the Fasiq Too?
Question
[ar]وَعَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ ﵁ قَالَ: إِنَّمَا النِّفَاقُ كَانَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ، فَأَمَّا الْيَوْمَ فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ الْكُفْرُ أَوِ الْإِيمَانُ[/ar] “It is narrated from Hudhayfa ﵁: ‘Hypocrisy existed in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; as for today, it is only kufr or iman’” (“Mishkat al-Masabih”, p. 18). From this narration it appears that in the eyes of the Sacred Law human individuals can be divided into three categories: one who affirms the divinity (of Allah)
Answer
[ar]عَذَابُ الْقَبْرِ حَقٌّ، سَوَاءٌ كَانَ مُؤْمِنًا أَوْ كَافِرًا، أَوْ مُطِيعًا أَوْ فَاسِقًا[/ar] “The punishment of the grave is true, whether one is a believer or a kafir, obedient or a fasiq” (“Sharh al-Fiqh al-Akbar”, p. 123). A believer, whether obedient or sinful, will, in answer to the question of the Nakirayn, affirm tawhid, the messengership and the religion.
