Is the Prophet ﷺ Pointed to in the Grave?
Question
The point is that, after the questions “Who is your Lord?” (من ربك) and “What is your religion?” (ما دينك), the deceased is addressed and told: “What do you say about this man?” (ما تقول في هذا الرجل). Does the Messenger of Allah ﷺ come into the grave bodily? What is meant by “this man”? A poet says: [ar]کون آتا ہے لاش پر میری ٭ سر سے چادر ہٹائی جاتی ہے[/ar] “Who is it that comes to my corpse? — the sheet is being lifted from my head.” Is the demonstrative noun (ism al-ishara)
Answer
The commentators of hadith have written that the veils between his grave and the Sacred Rawda are lifted and then the indication is made; hence “hadha” (“this”) has not been an indication toward one who is absent. Some are of the view that the indication is made toward what is known in the mind (ma‘hud dhihni)
