Collecting donations on commission
Question
Here donations are collected for the madrasa, and the fundraisers also take a commission from them. To what extent is this correct, and is it permissible or not?
Answer
Making an arrangement in this way — “whatever donations you bring, you will get a half or a third, etc., of it” — is not correct in the Shari‘a. In it the wage is unknown. Moreover, the wage has been made something that is to be produced by the hired worker’s (ajir’s) own work; and both of these things invalidate a hire (ijara) in the Shari‘a.
