Quartering police in a madrasa room

Question

The government says that during the holidays, lodging and board for the police will be arranged in your madrasa. Is it permissible for the police to stay in the closed, empty rooms or not?

Answer

The madrasa is a waqf for those who study and teach. Lodging and boarding unrelated people there is contrary to the purpose of the waqif (endower); therefore it is not permitted. Let it be arranged elsewhere. Yes, if it is for the interests (masalih) of the madrasa itself, it is permitted.
