Grain bought with zakat money sold after the price fell
Question
The head of a religious madrasa bought wheat at harvest time for the expenses of the madrasa’s kitchen (matbakh), on the reasoning that last year the price of grain had risen very high. This year the price fell, so that the difference came to 31 paise (small copper coins, fractions of a rupee) per kilo. What we need to know is this: the head teacher bought ten quintals of wheat at the rate of one rupee 31 paise. Now the price here is one rupee 5 paise.
Answer
Grain was bought with zakat money for the students; at that time there was a kitchen for the students, then the students were no longer there and the kitchen was closed. The grain was acquired specifically for the students, and the zakat was given specifically for the students’ food.
