Lighting in the Bathroom and Elsewhere
Question
Zayd’s younger brother had electricity installed in the mosque at his own expense, and he himself pays the bill. Only two bulbs are fitted, inside and outside; there is no light at all in the bathroom. When Zayd himself has finished, he switches off the electricity, although other worshippers are still occupied. If he is told anything, he says: “It is we who had the electricity installed; the bill will come higher.” If he is told: “Take the expense,” he refuses.
Answer
If that electricity is not sufficient, then the people of the mosque should arrange lighting wherever there is a need, whether with a lamp or with electricity. In these cases, whatever extra expense arises, the people of the mosque should pay it. The one who had the electricity installed for the sake of reward will certainly receive reward.
