Rewards for Those Serving the Mosque

Question

Zayd explains the translation of the Qurʾan in a mosque, and leads the prayer in the absence of the appointed imam. In blessed Ramadan, when the people of the mosque give a reward to the reciter (qari) and the listener (samiʿ) after the khatm (completion) of the Qurʾan, on that occasion they also give Zayd some money. Is it proper for Zayd to take that money or not? What if people collect that money among themselves as donations and give it, or collect it under the name of a reward?

Answer

As for those attached to the mosque who serve throughout the year, the people of the mosque giving them more in blessed Ramadan in addition to their salary — there is no harm in that; it is permissible, whether they give it from the income of the mosque’s waqf or by collecting donations, provided there is no compulsion in collecting the donations.
