Discharging the obligatory sacrifice through a sacrifice on behalf of the deceased

Question

Question: (1) Sacrifice is wajib upon Zayd according to the valid conditions of the Sacred Law, but he offers one goat or fat-tailed ram on behalf of some deceased relative, or a wali (saint), or a prophet. Is he then absolved of the obligation under the hadith [ar]عَلَى كُلِّ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ أُضْحِيَّةٌ[/ar] “Upon every household, every year, is a sacrifice,” or must he offer a separate sacrifice for his own obligation? (2)

Answer

(1) If he is offering the sacrifice on his own behalf and the aim is merely to convey the reward to the deceased, the obligation is thereby discharged from him and there is no need for a second sacrifice — provided there is no intention of a supererogatory (nafl)
