The ruling on saying “talaq, talaq, talaq”

Question

Question: Zayd and ‘Amr are brothers-in-law (one is the brother of the other’s wife). Quarrels kept occurring between the two over household matters. Zayd became extremely angry, to a degree that passed the bounds of madness, so that no distinction between good and bad remained, and Zayd said: “تو پھر اچھا طلاق طلاق طلاق” (“well then, fine: talaq, talaq, talaq”). Zayd neither addressed his wife, nor mentioned his wife by name, nor said the word “diya”, nor the word “di” (both forms of the verb “gave”)

Answer

It is true that the husband neither addressed his wife, nor mentioned his wife by name, nor said the word “diya”, nor the word “di”; he only said “talaq” three times. But talaq is given only to one’s own wife, not to some stranger; moreover, here the wife was being spoken of, and he gave talaq after hearing ill of her and being affected by it.
