How many talaqs result from “I gave one talaq, I gave one talaq, I gave one talaq”?
Question
Question: A man, because of discord with his wife, said to her in a gathering of several men and women: “میں تجھ کو ایک طلاق دی میں تجھ کو ایک طلاق دی میں تجھ کو ایک طلاق دی” (“I gave you one talaq, I gave you one talaq, I gave you one talaq”) — he said it in this manner three or four times. Immediately he related this incident in the same gathering to a religious scholar of that neighbourhood, the respected Shabbir.
Answer
In the case asked about, a major (mughallaza) divorce has taken effect judicially (qada'an). If the husband's intention was that he was giving talaq with the first word and mentioned the second and third words only for emphasis (ta'kid) and making her understand (tafhim), and he had no intention of talaq at all, then religiously (diyanatan)
