Ruling on talaq by the words “as I said it once, so also three times, a thousand times”
Question
Question: Zayd, getting angry with his wife Hinda over something, said to her, “میں نے طلاق دی تم جاؤ، اپنے گھر” (“I have given talaq; you go to your own home”). In reply Hinda said, “Until four or five come, I will not go.” At this Zayd went to the house of a female relative of his and, addressing his relative, said, “Come to my house and send my wife away from my house: I have given her talaq and finished the matter.” Then Zayd was asked, “What did you say?
Answer
In the case asked about, one revocable (raj‘i) talaq has certainly taken effect, by the explicit wording; and if by the words “تم جاؤ اپنے گھر” (“you go to your own home”) he intended talaq, then by them a second, irrevocable (ba’in) talaq has taken effect; if he did not intend it, it has not taken effect.
