Three talaqs

Question

Question: Zayd, while ill, without the intention of talaq, in anger and irritation — because of some matter or because of a quarrel and altercation — said these words to his wife: “to you is talaq, talaq, talaq” (تم کو طلاق ہے، طلاق ہے، طلاق ہے). A clamour arose among the people that the talaq had taken place, but Zayd read out texts from “Sharh al-Wiqaya” and “al-Hidaya”, which calmed the people somewhat. The texts of both books are given below. (1)

Answer

If Zayd was in his senses and understood what he was saying — as is evident from the words “by pronouncing talaq Zayd only meant to frighten and threaten” — then in the case asked about three talaqs have taken effect on Zayd’s wife and she has become finally divorced (mughallaza), so that keeping her now without halala is haram.
