Proof of the three talaqs from the Holy Qur’an

Question

Question: In the juz’ “Sayaqul”, ruku‘ 13, in the Arabic text from “al-talaqu marratan” (الطَّلاقُ مَرَّتَان) up to “zawjan ghayrah” (زَوْجًا غَيْرَه) the word “thalatha” (“three”) does not occur, nor does any hafiz recite the word “thalatha” in the said ruku‘ — read it and see for yourself. So, since the word “thalatha” is not in the Arabic text of the Qur’an, how did “three” come into the Urdu translation? Hence, are the three talaqs proven from the Holy Qur’an or not? And if they are, then by which verse?

Answer

The verse states that talaq twice is such that the husband retains the choice: if he wishes, he may keep his wife in a good manner in order to fulfil her rights (taking her back — ruju‘ — before the ‘idda ends), and if he wishes, he may detach himself from her (not taking her back). Whatever talaq he pronounces after these two talaqs, after it a major (mughallaza)
