The issue of the three talaqs
Question
Question: Zayd, fed up with his wife’s conduct, pronounced three talaqs in one sitting and also had the talaq announced in a newspaper. Now both husband and wife wish to come together again. So what do the scholars of religion and the muftis of the firm Shari‘a say in this regard: should the three talaqs pronounced at one time be regarded, according to the Qur’an, as a single one and the wife be taken back (ruju‘), or should one act in the light of the hadith about the case of Hazrat Rukana?
Answer
The right of talaq belongs to the man; the woman’s acceptance or non-acceptance has no bearing on it: even if she does not accept it, talaq takes effect. When the husband admits the talaq, witnesses are not needed. If the husband wrote a talaq and sent it to his wife, or published it in a newspaper, and he admits his writing, talaq likewise takes effect.
