The ruling on three talaqs in one sitting

Question

Zayd, angered by his wife’s harsh words, in a state of anger, in her absence and in the presence of another woman, gave her three talaqs at once, and then again told another person: “I pronounced talaq in this way.” Then a third person asked: “How did you pronounce talaq?” — and Zayd told them as well. Later it became known that Zayd’s wife was pregnant. Bakr gave advice, and a fatwa was given according to the Ahl-e Hadith school: “Take her back (ruju‘),” although Zayd follows the Hanafi school.

Answer

When three talaqs are given at once, a major (mughallaza) divorce takes effect; this is what is established by the Noble Qur’an. It is also in the noble hadith; on this there was consensus (ijma‘) of the noble Companions ﵃ in the time of Hazrat ‘Umar ﵁; and this is the position of the four imams — Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Malik, Imam al-Shafi‘i and Imam Ahmad.
