Washing with Water after Istinja' with a Clod
Question
If an imam performs istinja' with a clod of earth and does not use water even though water is available, and does not agree despite being told — is the prayer behind him valid or not?
Answer
If the impurity passes beyond its outlet and spreads until it reaches the size of a dirham, then purifying the body with water is necessary; in such a state, an imam who does not perform istinja' with water should not be made imam. If the impurity is less than that, one should still perform istinja' with water; otherwise the prayer will be makruh.
