Performing Istinja' with a Clod of Earth

Question

Zayd, 'Amr, Bakr and others perform istinja' in the toilet with water, without a clod of earth. Is this practice of theirs permissible or impermissible, and is any particular person singled out in this? We hope you will write clearly.

Answer

The sunna way is to perform istinja' first with a clod and after that with water. But if someone does not perform the major istinja' with a clod, but only with water, and complete cleanliness is achieved, this too is permissible.
