Using Water after the Clod

Question

Is istinja' valid only when, after [doing it] with a clod, one does it with water? Or, if one performs the minor and the major istinja' with water alone, is it valid or not? Or is it valid only if one does it both ways?

Answer

He should first do [istinja'] with a clod, then with water, because the ailment of drops is widespread in this age — although in some cases a clod alone or water alone also suffices.
