The Ruling on Performing Istinja'

Question

If there is a fear of missing the congregation (jama'at), and a person has not performed either the minor or the major istinja', should he join the prayer without istinja' or not?

Answer

If he has already performed istinja' with a clod of earth, and there is no impurity on his body to the extent of a dirham or more, then in that state he should join the congregation; otherwise he should perform istinja' and [then] pray (al-Tahtawi, p. 90).
