One Expiation or More for Zina Committed on Several Fast Days

Question

Zayd, while fasting in the noble Ramadan, committed zina (fornication) with Hinda, and he did so five or six times within that month. After committing zina Zayd would immediately perform ghusl, and when he went to the mosque to pray, the followers (muqtadis) made Zayd the imam. Zayd also committed zina in the state of menstruation (hayd), once or twice within the same month. How many fasts must Zayd now keep? Should he fast consecutively or separately, or give sadaqa and the like?

Answer

Zayd and Hinda must make up (qada) all the fasts that they invalidated through their vile act. And since, after breaking a fast, he broke another fast before performing the kaffara, the kaffaras will merge (tadakhul)
